I got home to find they had replaced the thermostat. It's the same kind, only white. The apartment smelled so bad that it nearly knocked me over when I walked in. I threw open all the windows (except the bedroom. The latch in there is broken, so Justin jammed a screw in it and I can't get it back out) and pulled out the steamvac. I pulled another gallon of water out of the bedroom. The legs of the microwave cart are starting to warp. So I filled the steamvac up with solution and started working on the carpet in the living room, which was surprisingly dry...no...let's say, unwet. I opened up the front door and pulled my carved wood screen in front of it to allow air, but not my cat, out. About an hour and ahalf later the carpet cleaners (actually "Karpet Kleaners," according to their t-shirts) showed up. They didn't shampoo anything, but they sprayed this solution on the carpet that they said would inhibit mold growth and help with the smell. They told me that it was standing water that makes that smell so I think I'll visit the leasing office on saturday and demand a note saying that the smell in the apartment is not from my cat, it's from the flood. They love threatening to "remove the cat." They said that when the carpet dried they'd come and replace the padding and re-Klean the Karpet. They gave me a bottle of the stuff they sprayed. Maybe I'll have Matt in the environmental department analyze it and tell me if it actually keeps mold from growing. I'm getting headaches now when I'm home.
Good news, though, I've been approved for residency in my old place. I was a little concerned because the carpets when we moved out would have had to be replaced. Sabby's diabetes was out of control about the time we moved out and he had a bladder infection and couldn't hold his water. I cleaned and cleaned, but nothing was getting the stains out. Maybe we won't get new carpet in the new place...Actually, probably not because I believe the current tenants are just on a three-month summer student lease. But we're giving the place lots of time to do what they need to do in that apartment before we move in. Fourth floor, here I come!
I made mediocre spaghetti bolognese for dinner last night.
