Day 28 - Favorite Series Arc
I love the arc in season four. The whole series was well-planned and each episode has clues embedded in them that hint at where the series is going. The bees are disappearing, planets keep going missing, the Ood are freed, and underneath all of that, Rose Tyler keeps appearing and we don't know why. I think it's a fascinating story and was revealed in an intriguing way.
It also gives hints to the Specials and to future series with the Donna begging the Doctor to save someone from Pompeii (history repeats in "The Waters of Mars"), Wilf's character development, and the introduction of River Song.
While I definitely have my favorite episodes of Series 4, there's not a single one that I skip over.
Oh yeah, and I'm a total sucker for a reunion.

Date: 2011-04-13 12:10 pm (UTC)Now I have no problem with the Doctor meeting people out of order. It makes sense with the life he leads and makes for an interesting story line. The Doctor struggling to figure out where he’s met person ‘X’, person ‘X’ not being able to tell the Doctor all that much, etc.
I think that there was a lot being asked of the audience to accept River Song as the Doctor’s (possible) wife when it was being splashed everywhere that Rose was coming back, and, sadly for me, this way of introduction lessened her character because my initial reaction to her was “Other Woman”. As a Doctor/Rose shipper this makes her a character I am not inclined like.
I find, even upon re-watch, it still feels like a slap in the face to everything RTD worked for and did in his 4.5 seasons as executive producer. I will never say that his production years were perfect but it does feel like he was being muscled out. I think [Bad username or site: ”_thirty2flavors” @ livejournal.com] said it best in the [Bad username or site: ”dwrewatch” @ livejournal.com] that River would have been a stronger, more likeable, character if she was introduced in S5. Actually, I believe that if she was introduced in S5 I probably would ship Eleven/River. Matt Smith and Alex Kingston have a great rapport with each other.
Regardless, I don’t mind River now but I don’t think we’re going to get all that much character development from her. But if anyone can make me like the character it WILL be Alex Kingston (and I think the production is blessed to have her). And … well this has turned into a River rant and not me talking about what I liked about S4 so I am going to end that thought here.
As for the rest of S4, I was really struck (during a re-watch) how SO MUCH of The Unicorn and the Wasp foreshadows what’s going to happen to Donna. And yes Waters of Mars.
AND WILF!! My beloved Wilf! In a way it’s hard to watch Bernard Cribbens because just before I got to see S4 my Papa died. He and Wilf were practically one and the same so yeah. I can’t get through a Wilf scene without at least one *sniff*.

We really must be tele-pathetic, not telepathic, tele-pathetic.
