Dominic and I were the first to arrive, but people streamed in immediately after us. The room was enormous and Bill and Anna had lined the room with three rows of tables covered in light yellow tablecloths. Dominic stood in the center of a group of adults all cooing over him. He'd look up at them all, close his eyes for a few seconds, then open them almost as though he'd hoped all the strange people were now gone. There were at least 30 people there after everyone had arrived.
Little Jacob seemed overwhelmed by all the people and broke down in screams when we sang happy birthday to him. He also didn't want to open his gifts. His second present was a book and he remained engrossed in that while the older children tore the paper off his other presents. That was actually really fun to watch.
After the tables were put away and most of the people had gone, the children started running around playing tag. Dominic got right into the thick of it. Besides Jacob, Dominic was the youngest child there and also the slowest-moving (again, except for Jacob who isn't quite proficient at walking, let alone running), so Dominic was usually "it." The game of Tag must be an inborn trait because Dominic took to it like he took to breathing. He chased after the other children and when he eventually caught one (usually by sneaking up behind the unsuspecting kid), he immediately took off in the opposite direction. I had never seen Dominic run before and the look of sheer joy on his face as he ran with the other children still makes my heart flutter.
While writing this I got a bit of spam that started with "Never eat anything you can't lift." That seems like good advice.
