Cathy and I finished alphabetizing the files yesterday. Pam and I went down to the warehouse this morning and barcoded the boxes. We also found a few accounting boxes that were messed up. I use the term "messed up" because I don't know how else to describe them. So here are the descriptions. The boxes that I labelled "messed up" had one or more of the following problems.

1. the box had caved in.
2. the box wasn't labelled.
3. the box was labelled, but in a place where you can't read the label when all the boxes are stacked on one another.
4. the box was full of stuff other than what the label indicated.
5. the box was full of junk that should have been thrown out two years ago when the person it belonged to was fired but instead was labelled "Dept. 05" and put in the warehouse.

No. 5 makes me furious.

The HR department had a birthday party for those with birthdays in October and November. I had too much work to do, so I ate my brownie and ice cream then took off to get more work done. While I was gone, Alane said that everyone needed to come see me and sign up for 4 hour shifts to index the files in all the boxes. Then she came down to the warehouse to tell me. I thought, "Fantastic!" So far, three people have volunteered. Three. Out of 30. Bastards.

very typical, actually

Maybe Alane needs to give a more formal demand for people to help, with some consequences.

Under similar circumstances, I did most of the file room packing for a clerk who simply didn't get the idea of how to fit things in boxes together. Not one thing in one box, and one thing in another, but *several* things together.
With *labels* on.

I know, our standards are absurdly high.
