Oct. 14th, 2004 07:04 amA new Japanese/Thai restaurant opened in the location of my favorite, now-defunct, thai restaurant. Justin and I tried it out last night. I wasn't expecting anything great because Northeastern Ohio isn't exactly known for good Japanese food. Then when we were seated, I realized that the restaurant was owned and operated by the same man who owns and operates Hibachi Japan, a fantastic Japanese restaurant a few blocks from here. Hibachi Japan is really good, but it's expensive and you need a reservation to get in. I ordered the hibachi chicken. It came with the same mushroom soup and salad with orange-ginger dressing that you get at Hibachi, but the dressing on the salad wasn't quite as good. I thought I was imagining it. Then our entrees came and they were utterly tasteless. I started pouring on the soy sauce. It helped a little bit. Justin had ordered a spicy beef and shrimp fried rice. He took a bite and realized he'd been given the wrong dish. He could taste coconut milk. When the waitress came to ask how everything was, Justin said, "It's not very hot." So she got him a little crock of chili paste. He put the whole thing in to get it hot enough to his liking. He admitted later in the car that the dish had almost no flavor whatsoever, so when he added the chili paste that's all he could taste.
All in all, a complete disappointment. I miss you, Bangkok Gourmet. :(
