I got back from my History final about an hour ago. I've been relaxing and unwinding and thought I'd take a moment to tell you that I think it went well. The best essay I had prepared (Easter 1916 to the end of the Civil War) was not on the exam, unfortunately, and I'd only done a half-assed job preparing for the one that actually appeared (The arrival of British troops during the Troubles through the 1998 Good Friday Agreement). To make matters worse, the actual question differed from the study guide by about 6 years. So the beginning of my essay is... pretty messed up. Also, I wasn't real clear on all the schisms in the different paramilitary groups, so I summed that extremely complex issue up in one paragraph (not good). I can probably blame the bad ending on the fact that I was quickly running out of time. There were only two people still working when I finished. I wrote from 5:45 until 8:00. I filled a whole blue book and then filled more than half of a second one. My hand hurts.
I feel like I did very well on the short-answer section of the exam. I spent half a blue book on the IDs and used a page and a half to describe a couple of them. There's no way you can sum up the Easter Rising in one paragraph, so that ended up being a mini essay.
So, I can't say that I nailed it, but I think I did all right.
I also got my comparative article analysis back and got a 93%, so that's very good news. The comparative analysis is 30% of my grade. The final is another 30%. I might end up keeping my 4.0 after all.
Courses completed:
First Year Experience (orientation)
US History: the Modern Period
US History: the Formative Period
History of Civilization 2
Irish History
Music as a World Phenomenon
Core Math 1
Core Math 2
Core Math 3
Modeling Algebra
Seven Ideas that Shook the Universe (physics)
College Writing I
Next fall:
History of the British Isles: Early Modern Period
Elementary French 1
The Black Experience
That's 10 credit hours. I usually take 6 or 7. I'm a little nervous, but The Black Experience is an online course and I figure I can work on that in that hour before class every day. Also, the British Isles history class is taught by the same professor who taught my Irish History class and the syllabus is almost exactly the same. And since I know what to expect, I don't think it'll be a problem.

Date: 2011-05-04 11:11 am (UTC)I'm a little nervous about the online course, tbh. I hear that they usually make up for the lack of facetime by assigning more work.
