30 Days of Nu-Who: Day 29

Day 29 - Favorite Music/Song

I've been looking forward to posting this since I started this meme because I love this song so much. It's not just one of my favorite Doctor Who songs. It's actually one of my all-time favorite songs. I frequently listen to it in my car. It's beautiful and evocative. You can almost picture silver-leaved trees and deep red grass.

I love the thrumming drumbeat through the song. It's reminiscent of a heartbeat and gives the song a feeling of life.

It has this sort of melancholic feel to it which morphs into a triumphant sound before dropping back into something a little more sober. And, finally, reprising the bit from the beginning, it ends on an exciting, scary sort of sound which recalls the dangers the Doctor faces constantly.

In the series, this song is used when the Doctor describes Gallifrey to Martha. It also plays when Professor Yana is on-screen, hinting at what's to come.

[livejournal.com profile] seduff created this video using "This is Gallifrey," and it is one of my favorites. However, she skips the first part of the song, so I've posted another video below which has the whole song without dialogue overtop.

Oh what a beautiful song I don't have that album yet I think I am going to have to get it soon. I just love Murry Gold's work.

Thanks so much for sharing the seduff video. It's brilliant!! Have to go post about it in my journal now!

I especially love the beginning when she uses the darkness and storm imagery. Stunning.

My favorite Who song is Doomsday. LOVE LOVE LOVE

Did he sing on oooh? My son also loves the song! he is dreading when his voice will change and he won't be this angelic soprano any longer. He is 11. How old is yours?

Yeah that mental image is pretty amazing, poor sad boy singing Doomsday. Awww!

I'm glad you got to spend the evening with him though!

My dad was a low baritone, but he had a pretty good light falsetto, so there is some hope! (I'm a singer myself)

I'm a classically trained soloist, folksinger and wannabe rockstar. .... right now, I do church music, like my grandmother and greatgrandmother before me, which involves singing, choirleading, piano, guitar and even some native american flute! .... and my other gig is to play folksongs (and secretly rock songs as well) at my farmer's market. Nothing is more awesome than going from "Scarborough Fair" to "You Shook Me All Night Long". :) ... I split my time between teaching private lessons and running a small non-profit. So I'm the artsy fartsy one for sure! Husband is an actor -- next gig is Twelfth Night -- and son studies dance as well -- so with my MFA in writing we pretty much have all the arts covered.

one must walk a fine line between Artsy and Flaky. I hope I stay on the sunny side of that line.

Every so often I have to sing "Types of Wood" (http://fannishliss.livejournal.com/101302.html) at the farmer's market to stay real.
