Day 23 - Something Epic
This one should have been harder to choose, but I knew exactly what I wanted to talk about today. Everything about the Tenth Doctor's finale was epic, but what impressed me the most was the music.
I love how it starts out soft like a lullaby and slowly grows. It retains the somber mood, but becomes grander, triumphant. Mark Chambers' counter-tenor voice positively rings. Then it comes to climax and soars into a reprise of the Doctor's theme. This song never fails to give me chills.
Guys, this song was written for a TV show. If that ain't epic, I don't know what is.

Ok, go listen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuHynbdEFDA), right now, and tell me if you still can't place it (actually, the comments give it away).
I can see why you can't place it though: it's very low in the background now that I rewatch the scene. *sniff*
As for "Vale Decem," I just never got as much emotion out of it as I have "Four Knocks," probably because I know which scene made me cry the most. Down to personal, preference of course, but I still think "Vale Decem" is a great piece either way. (And I try not to think of how many Latin errors are in the piece; someone pointed them out a long time ago and it amused me that they created such a huge piece with so many errors.)
As for Series 5...you've got Eleven's theme and that takes up a lot of the big bangs for the background music when you watch it. However, there are some other good ones (as I scroll through my ratings) and I still haven't given it a proper chance yet. Did enjoy "The Life and Death of Amy Pond" it seems.

Date: 2011-04-06 01:41 am (UTC)It's beautiful! Now I have to go find that part and watch it to hear the music behind the monologue.

Date: 2011-04-06 01:53 am (UTC)Exactly! That's why it gives me a little *sniff* moment each time I hear it. Have you heard "A Lot of Life Behind Us"? I can place that one as well and it is also a nice, calming, sorrowful musical piece (which is what I felt was missing mostly from the Series 5 music; much like Eleven now that I think of it).
Oh noes! You're going to go rewatch that bit of EoT? But...it's just so hard to watch... *is still traumatized*

Date: 2011-04-05 09:10 pm (UTC)It's an incredibly beautiful piece of music in its own right, but when associated with the accompanying events... I'm a wreck.

Date: 2011-04-05 09:17 pm (UTC)My son is quite taken with "Doomsday." He stood in front of his class last week and sang it to them. I'm glad they obliged him. :)
