30 Days of Nu-Who: Day 7
Mar. 14th, 2011 11:44 amDay 7 - Favorite Episode
Back when I was doing the 30 Days of TV meme, I posted this, which states that my favorite episode is “Blink.” I still like “Blink,” but I can’t take it as seriously because of the season 5 episodes featuring the Weeping Angels. I just don’t find them as terrifying as I did before, which spoils the episode for me just a little bit.
But “Midnight” - Oh, I love it so much. It’s perfectly written and shows that you can tell an outstanding story on a very small budget (this was the “cheap” episode).

I’ve already written about “Midnight” here and I don’t want to repeat myself. However, the ending has got me thinking about my personal belief towards stories, especially fanfiction. When I write (which is, admittedly, rare), I always want to end my stories in a way that makes the characters better, whether it be happier, wiser, braver, etc. That doesn’t actually happen in “Midnight.” In fact, everyone ends up either dead or traumatized. Maybe the humans on board the bus are slightly wiser, but I doubt it, especially considering Val’s last words, “I said it was her.” She’s in such denial, she hadn’t learned anything.
This episode makes me laugh, it makes me sad, and it makes me scared and that’s why it’s my favorite.

Date: 2011-03-14 03:57 pm (UTC)You know you are right I usually write happy endings as well in my fanfictions. It is my nature but in this one nobody wins.

Date: 2011-03-14 05:26 pm (UTC)As for the fanfiction: you know I'm not much of a writer of happy endings, or even happy things, so I can't say that I fall under that category. Actually, most of my stories don't have a good ending and one, something from a few years ago, actually casts a character in an even harsher light than the show (for the record, not many liked that version of my story but instead preferred the happier one I wrote). I like happy endings as much as the next one but I'd much prefer something that makes you pause at the last words and go, "huh." But, it's a good idea if you're thinking of branching out. I could always send some angst your way. ;)
P.S. - I will always love this ep just for that little gay reference from Sky about, when talking of her ex, how "she needed space." I miss you RTD. :( Oh, and the way you never know the savior's name. She's just known as the Hostess: The unsung hero.

Blink scares my kids - Midnight scares me.
