I bit off a bit more than I could chew this weekend. In addition to the three papers I need to write and the French portfolio that needs to be created, I agreed to go to the park with a friend and let our kids play together for a while. There were a few other guests who stopped by as well and a mishap with an ATM receipt I found in my driveway and assumed was mine (it wasn't *phew*) that left me far too stressed for a Sunday. One thing I wasn't willing to cancel, though, was this trip to the park.

I met Amy and her two kids at 2:00. Dominic and I got there about 15 minutes before her and Dominic quickly made friends with some of the other boys. Amy's kids are a little more shy (ok, a lot more shy) than Dominic, but when I asked him to play with Elijah, Elijah kind of skittered away to play by himself. After Dominic's third attempt at making friends, I told him he was fine and just to go play what he wanted. As Dominic turned away, a line of boys went running by him. He held out his hand and they all slapped him five as he passed and then he followed and became embroiled in a game of tag in which he was almost always "it." And that's when it occurred to me: Dominic is cool. And not in that way that I've always thought he was cool. He's the definition of schoolyard cool. He's the kid all the others want to play with. Even the older boys were playing with him (and it was hilarious to watch him and an older boy twice Dominic's size size each other up) and the girls were trying to get his attention (which left him confused, I noted).

He's the exact opposite of his father and me. And now I'm positive that he's going to grow up to be a straight-laced, right-wing politician. Because that's how things go. And also because I overreact to everything.
