Justin's XBox is defective. It won't turn on. I called Target last night to get all the details on exchanging it for another. I needed the receipt and everything that came with the unit.

But let's go back a bit to the day I bought the machine. It was extremely busy because it was close to Christmas and the only Xboxes they had in stock were the machines bundled with either an NBA game or the Need for Speed game. I chose the racing game because there's no chance I will play a basketball game. The unit wouldn't ring up at the register so they took the unit to the customer service desk and a woman behind the counter was able to punch something in to ring it up. I paid for it using my debit card.

Justin took the Xbox back to Target today to exchange it for a new non-defective one. He took it to the customer service desk and gave them the receipt. Stephanie, the woman behind the counter, told him that Target doesn't sell that unit. Then she said she couldn't take it back because there was no barcode on the receipt. Then she gave Justin Microsoft's phone number and told him to take it up with them. Justin asked to speak to a Supervisor. Instead of getting a Supervisor, Stephanie got security and had them escort Justin out of the store.

Justin called me and gave me a bunch of numbers. I called Target to explain that it had to be rung up at the customer service desk which is probably why there was no barcode. Stephanie told me that there was nothing she could do and that I needed to call Microsoft. I asked for the number, but she wouldn't give it to me.

So I called Target's corporate customer care center and got Microsoft's number. I noticed they have an option where you can leave feedback on a customer care experience, so I decided to do that. I thought it would be a recording, but instead I got a call center in India. I told the guy about my experience and he seemed appalled. He put me on hold for several minutes, then put me through to an American guy. The American guy took a bunch of information, then said he needed to call the store and find out what's going on over there. He seemed genuinely upset when he heard Justin's story. But I wonder. It's been about an hour and he hasn't called back. I wish I had thought to get his direct number so I could call and check up. This has not been a good experience.

I don't understand why a store that will accept returns without receipts is giving us such a hard time because they failed to put a bar code on a receipt. I'm asking for an even exchange. I'm not asking for money back.
