Yep, -Angel- improves radically in season 2. The first year is okay, but the writers are obviously trying to find a consistent tone and POV - most of the best episodes are -Buffy- related (though I think Spike was written severely out of character in his appearance). There's also a "monster-of-the-week" feel to many of the shows. With the second year there's much more of a focus on Angel's character, and his past, and more developed story arcs (and Wolfram and Hart becomes a more dangerous threat). The drama's taken up a few notches (in a good way), too. And there's more Whedon-style humor (ALWAYS a good thing :) ).
