Jul. 28th, 2005 09:23 amI went to the grocery store after work yesterday to spend the last of my money on cheap groceries to last to the end of the week. I decided to make orange chicken for dinner last night and macaroni and cheese for dinner (no, not the boxed stuff!) tonight. The leftovers should carry us over into Saturday when I'll have money again. I got out of the store with just over $12 in groceries. Not too shabby! I decided on these recipes because they're fairly easy. Or at least, they should've been. The orange chicken, which I had never attempted before, looked easy enough. Mix up a quick sauce, marinate chicken, bread chicken, fry chicken, toss with sauce. What should've taken no more than an hour (including half an hour of downtime while the chicken marinated) took over two frickin' hours! I blame my tiny, tiny kitchen where I have to constantly rearrange things in order to have room to work. I can't wait to get the house! On the plus side, Justin said it's the best orange chicken he's ever had. :)
The macaroni and cheese should be easier. I've made it several times. The hardest part is getting the bechamel to boil. 'Course, I have a mess to clean up when I get home. I dirtied almost every pan I own yesterday and Justin doesn't wash pans.
Oh! And as I left the store to go to my car, traffic stopped in both directions to allow me to cross the street. That hasn't happened since I was young, cute, and in Moscow, ID. It's the little things that make me happy. Really. :)
