Today's writer's block question asks what your answering machine message is. That strikes me as an silly question with inevitably boring answers. However, once upon a time, my answering machine was They Might Be Giant's Minimum Wage. My phone suddenly became very popular, but I got mostly hang-ups. My dad was furious, though, because my number was his old number. That was one of the lower points in our relationship, though, so I didn't change it.
I had a craving for sugar cookies today. I hadn't intended to buy any, but as I was purchasing my pasta salad, I saw some delicious-looking iced sugar cookies next to the register and grabbed them. Honestly, they're a bit disappointing.
I've been concerned for months about Dominic at school. He tells me he has no friends and no one will play with him. I found out yesterday, that's the furthest thing from the truth. He is, apparently, the most sought-after boy amongst his female classmates. To the point where the girls have started fighting over him.
I took Dominic to a birthday party yesterday and was talking with some of the other parents. The parents of little girls would say, "Oh! You're Dominic's mom! I've heard all about him!" And I'd go, "Uh... what's your daughter's name?"
Brianna's mom was telling me how Brianna (a quiet, shy little girl) got into a fight with Addison because Addison cut in front of Brianna to stand next to Dominic and she believes Dominic is going to marry her. As she's telling me this story, Dominic walks by, hand-in-hand, with little Ava. My jaw nearly hit the floor.
When I was Dominic's age, we (the girls) used to delouse each other whenever we touched a boy. We certainly weren't discussing marriage.
Dominic seems pretty embarrassed by the whole thing. And maybe that's the problem. Maybe he doesn't want the girls fighting over who gets to stand next to him. He just wants to play Angry Birds or Sharkboy and Lavagirl (or Vampire Sharkboy and Vampire Lavagirl, which is a game with very interesting rules that don't involve drinking blood at all).

Date: 2012-02-02 07:02 am (UTC)OMG, that's a fabulous track to have as your message. Well done, you. I had a Buffy sample on my answering machine for a long time, but then for even longer I had a sample from an old horror movie (that was the opening to a song)...
So what are the rules to Vampire Sharkboy? Hopefully there is no biting!

Date: 2012-02-02 02:39 pm (UTC)you're probably right though, I expect he's a bit freaked out by all the attention, and it's likely making his interactions with the boys more awkward too
