30 Days of Nu-Who: Day 18

Day 18 - Fave Amy Moment

I feel sort of bad choosing a moment from "The Eleventh Hour" as my favorite Amy moment. I was really excited about her character when she was introduced. She started out really strong and then just sort of petered out. It's been a whole season and I still don't really know much about her. Adult Amy seems to be exactly like little Amelia, only with much shorter skirts. However, I'm not going to dissect Amy's character here, mostly because I'm suffering from a nasty cold and my brain isn't functioning well at all. What I will talk about is the thing that I love most about Amy: her innate bravery.

In "The Eleventh Hour," Amy is introduced praying to Santa Claus to send her help because there's a crack in her wall, and even though her Aunt thinks it's an ordinary crack, Amy knows it's not because she can hear voices coming from it. Coincidentally, the Doctor crash lands in her backyard. Amy, thinking this is the help she's just asked for races outside and meets the Doctor. She then takes him inside and feeds him an assortment of food trying to find something he'll like.

This is played as a silly scene and it's a lot of fun to watch, but what I loved most of all is the very end when we come to the point of it.

DOCTOR: So, your aunt. Where is she?

AMELIA: She's out.

DOCTOR: And she left you all alone?

AMELIA: I'm not scared.

DOCTOR: ‘Course you’re not. You're not scared of anything! Box falls out of the sky, man falls out of box, man eats fish custard, and look at you, just sitting there. So you know what I think?

AMELIA: What?

DOCTOR: Must be a hell of a scary crack in your wall.

I love this because it's a twist on what most people would find scary. Strange men crawling out of flaming boxes and demanding weird foods doesn't phase Amy in the least. It's the crack in her wall, a thing most people would find utterly mundane, that scares her. And it turns out she had prioritized properly.

I found I liked little Amy better than Adult Amy. *points to scene you have a video clip for*
Matt Smith works fantastically well with kids.

It's odd, when Rory was around, then I found myself liking Amy better. I've thought about this for a while and I chalk that up to a lack of characterization in S5, especially when it comes to Amy.

When we get to the season final I had very little empathy for her. I think the emotional impact of having her parents back would have been stronger if we had met them in the first place or, had her metion how they died(?). I don't remember that being said.

I'm going to stop now, this is just a taste of what I have issues with when it comes to S5.

I'm hoping for the same thing, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't happen.

I really liked this episode it is one of my favorites of S5 I do hope they develope Amy a bit better in the next season.

Love it when DW makes the simplest things scary. I would have never thought about a crack in a wall being scary until my daughter said cracks and closets are always scary.
