Feb. 4th, 2011 08:23 amI've been a little stretched lately with the amount of writing I need to do for school. It's not the writing so much as the research. It's taking up the vast majority of my free time.
Krissy and I have settled on a thesis for our audio essay. We were given the topic of the Gabrielle Giffords shooting and have decided to talk about free speech and how words mean things. I was inspired by this post from Letters from Titan. While I was doing research on Jared Lee Loughner I found that he first met Giffords during a Congress on your Corner event in 2007 where he asked the congresswoman, "How do you know words mean things?" And I thought that focusing on the fact that words mean things and how we need to take responsibility for the words we say would be a good topic for a complex issue.
We've had a couple of snow days at Kent State which has pushed the deadline for my paper on Hugh O'Neill and the Seven Years War back at least five days. I feel much more comfortable with this later deadline because we are still in the 12th century in class.
And now, a Dominic story:
Dominic and Justin play "Worms" on the Xbox. I don't know much about it, but it seems the point of the game is to destroy your opponent's worm army. Dominic was setting up his next shot and the worm says, "To kill him would be hubris."
Dominic scrunched up his features to make his "angry face" and replied, "Then it will be hubris!"

Date: 2011-02-04 07:59 pm (UTC)Krissy and I both knew we wanted to stay away from the gun control issue. It seems like one of those topics that's been hashed and rehashed and there's really nothing new to say about it. While I was doing my research, though, I came across reports that there were at least 3 people in the crowd with concealed carry weapons on them and a video of a guy who said (and I'm paraphrasing here), "It's important that we have an armed civilian militia to take down guys like [Loughner]." He didn't mention that Loughner was brought down when someone hit him with a folding chair. As far as I can tell, no one else drew a weapon. I'll retract this statement if I find out otherwise. It was that term "civilian militia" that stuck out at me. And not in a positive way.
