I'm on a quest!
May. 24th, 2012 08:22 amI love living in an era where I can order nearly anything I want on the internet and have it delivered to my door. I love having the option. However, I really prefer not exercising that option. I like going to stores and I like having what I want immediately. I'm impatient that way.
I'm also really into bread baking right now and I want a dough-rising bucket desperately. It's a completely unnecessary gadget, but I'm having an issue with the breads I'm making out of The Bread Baker's Apprentice. The author believes (and I agree) that bread should be made using only the minimum amount of yeast necessary to make the bread rise. However, that means that, due to factors I haven't quite sussed, my bread is taking far, far longer to rise than the recipes suggest. Hours longer. Many hours. So many hours that I was beginning to believe my brand new jar of instant yeast was dead. Right now I'm using an old pyrex bowl that I've used for proofing bread for years. But there's no good way to tell when the bread has doubled. I've been taking pictures and comparing them. There's a better way, and the bucket is it.
I thought it would be easy to get. I remember my mother having one when I was a kid. All of the bakers in the BBA challenge used them. But I can't find one to save my life.
(Speaking of my life, I was accosted by a man outside the first store I went to last night, but it was scary and I'm not quite ready to talk about it.)
("Accosted" is probably too strong a word, but it was still pretty scary. And he told me I was unable to relate to him, which I found insulting.)
When I was unsuccessful at finding one at any of the local stores, I decided to drive half an hour to the outlet mall north of here. It took much longer because some of the roads I usually take were closed and then I got lost.
The outlet mall didn't have any stores with bread-rising buckets, but it did have a Harry & David, so it wasn't a total loss.
It was late when we got back to our own neighborhood, so I decided to grab a pizza. When we walked into the shop, I noticed they had a dough-rising bucket. Not for sale, though. >:(
So I'm placing an order today at King Arthur Flour, but this means I have to buy other things, too. Y'know, to make it worth my while. Because this is how my mind works. And where else am I going to find a dough whisk and diastatic malt powder? Not the outlet mall, I can tell you that!
