Sep. 19th, 2005 08:58 amWe got moved into the house this weekend. There's still a few things at the apartment we need to move over like laundry I'd been putting off doing and dishes in the kitchen. Then it's remove the trash, vacuum the carpets and we outta there! I can't say I'm not a little sad to leave this apartment. I truly love it. Large bedrooms, two bathrooms, sunken living room and a drop-dead gorgeous view from the floor-to-ceiling wall of windows. The leaves on the maple trees outside the master bedroom window will be changing soon and I never got a picture of them. I thought we'd be in that place for a lot longer than we were. Still, the house is fantastic and I really love it. It's nice to have working central air especially since the weather remains so hot. Also, I've been doing laundry in my brand new washer and dryer. That cuts down the time it takes to put in a load from 15 minutes to about 5. It's a long walk from the apartment to the laundry room. And lastly, bringing in groceries is no longer the chore it used to be.
Justin's parents decorated Dom's room on Thursday. They put up a border, curtains, and valances. They bought the border and valances in the same pattern as his bedding, Zanzibar. It came out soooo cute! I had no intention of buying the extra stuff in that bedding pattern because it's expensive. I thought it was expensive because it was a specialty item from Babies 'R' Us. Turns out that it's actually high-quality stuff. The valances have several different fabrics including velvet and ultra-suede and the animals on it are textured. The monkey is made out of some sort of faux lambs-wool!
After Justin and I got our stuff in the house and unpacked a little, we went back to the apartment to collect the cat. He seemed a little lost in the apartment with all the stuff gone. I picked him up and cuddled with him for a minute before leaving. He started shaking a little as we were walking down the hallway. I put him in the back seat of the car and he settled in. He likes to lay across the back seat. I carried him inside the house and set him down on the couch in the living room. I thought a familiar scent would help calm him. He immediately jumped off the couch and started exploring. He was not happy with what he found. Neighbor Bill told me last week that the house had been rented for a year (side note: the previous owners wrote a disclosure statement that said the house had never been rented. This makes for a very unhappy Annissa and Justin). The renters had 3 dogs and a cat. Apparently the scent of other animals still lingers very strongly when you have the sense of smell of a cat. We followed Sabby around a little bit, but he would hiss at us if we got too close to him. He didn't settle down the entire night. He was just sure there were dogs in that house that we weren't telling him about. He jumped up and off the bed several times through the night. I never realized what a heavy walker he is. It's like he slaps his paws against the floor as he walks. There's hardwood in the bedrooms and every time he walks in it wakes me up. The following morning he was still pretty wound up. He earned himself the new name "Mr. Hissypants." Justin left to return the van to Enterprise and I started unpacking and sorting laundry in the basement. When Justin came home, he decided it was time to show Sabby the basement. So he carried him down. I heard yowling and hissing. The smell of dogs is strongest in the basement where the renters had confined them during the night. Even I can smell them. Sabby, not seeing any dogs, calmed down enough to explore and make sure there were no dogs, but he had no interest in staying down there. Now I can leave the door open and he just waits at the top of the stairs. We also showed him the second story last night as Justin was putting the bookshelves back together and unpacking books. Now that he's seen the whole house, he's much calmer. He's taken to sleeping at the foot of the bed again. I've missed that.
Justin's parents may have dropped by unannounced for the first and last time. We had just taken showers (separately, thank you!) and were sitting on the couch watching The Naked Gun enjoying being clean and cool and waiting for clean clothes to come out of the dryer. Justin was trying to coerce me into doing terrible, dirty things to him. I was wearing panties so I was far more dressed than he. Suddenly, his parents were on the porch knocking on the door! Justin says (and I know you can hear this outside), "It's my parents! Do you have any clothes?!" Then yells, "Just a minute!" He ran and got dressed very quickly. I took a little longer because my clothes don't fit well and I had to put on a bra. They didn't stay long. They were possibly more embarrased than us.
For some reason, Justin decided that taking apart the bookshelves was the way to go. Last night he realized that probably wasn't the best thing to do when he tried putting them back together. He put the sides of one bookshelf on upside down and the bottom of another shelf on upside down. The he broke the third bookshelf entirely. Luckily they're cheap shelves and easily replaced. It would be nice not to have to spend the money, though. He started unpacking books, but he was being really picky about the ones he put up. He finally explained, "I know it's pretentious, but I want to put the best books on these shelves so people will be impressed." He followed it up with, "Aaah, Kafka, you're going on the second shelf!"
It was so weird to have so many volunteers moving my belongings while I sat around doing practically nothing. Still, I tried to take boxes to the elevator on the dolly. I was walking back from my second trip when a wave of nausea and light-headedness hit me. I got back to the apartment, sat down on the living room step and Sony brought me some gatorade. I didn't feel good, but it wasn't that bad. By 5:00 that night the story had become, "Annissa had a fainting spell!"
One last thing. I'm now being watched for preeclampsia. My blood pressure has risen 20 points in the past month. I'm supposed to lay off the salt and drink lots more fluids. I ate some potato chips yesterday and woke up to extremely swollen, achy fingers. Apparently the doc was serious about the whole "lay off the salt" thing.
