I went for weekly groceries yesterday. I think that may be the last time until the baby's born. It nearly knocked me flat. It took me over an hour just to get the groceries in the cart (a task that shouldn't have taken more than 20 minutes). By the time I got to the checkout, I was ready to collapse. And I mean that literally. I got the groceries into the trunk of my car, returned the cart (I can't stand when people leave them in the parking spaces), and sat in the car for a few minutes before taking off for home. I was still exhausted when I got home so I sat in the car a while longer. Well, for about an hour actually. I just couldn't move and the thought of taking all of those groceries up to my apartment was far too daunting. Somehow I missed Justin who made it home, into the apartment, out again and to the house before I made it upstairs with the first load of groceries. There's still a box of cat food in the car that I couldn't take up yesterday. I'll get it today.

I got a recipe for overnight oatmeal. It looked so tasty on t.v. so I gave it a try. I went to the health food store and bought steel-cut oats. Before I went to bed last night I combined a cup of oats with slightly more than a cup of dried berries (the recipe calls for two cups, but I used all I had), four cups of water, and 1/2 cup of milk in the crockpot, set it to low and went to bed. I woke up at 3 a.m. to the most delicious, nutty smell. I had a really hard time going back to sleep. I woke up again at 6:00. After my shower, I went into the kitchen and pulled the lid off. It still smelled delicious, but it looked like vomit. It had way too much liquid. So I left the lid off, gave it a stir and went to apply my makeup. When I came back to it, it had thickened a bit so I dished some up. I really like the idea of waking up to a hot breakfast, but this oatmeal left much to be desired. Maybe the fruit wasn't as sweet as it should've been, but this oatmeal needed sugar...and lots of it. And I'm the kind of person who doesn't ever put sugar on her cereal. So I'm thinking of using some dehydrated apples and brown sugar next time. As disappointed as I was, the texture of the steel-cut oats was far superior to the rolled oats you find in grocery stores.

After my second and last trip up from the car last night, I shut and locked the door behind me. Then I realized I couldn't see the cat. I looked out into the hallway and sure enough, he was out there exploring. I live at the end of a very, very long hallway. So I went out into the hallway, shut the door behind me and followed Sabby as he ran from door to door, sniffing at the jambs. He made it about halfway down the hall before two men came out of the elevator. Sabby stopped dead in his tracks and watched them. Slowly, as the men came toward him, his ears went back and his eyes got big. Finally, he reared back, shook his head, and dashed back toward the apartment at top speed (which is pretty slow at his age). He ran out of steam at my neighbor's door and stopped to sniff at their doorjamb while I caught up to him. When we got back into our apartment, he laid down and went to sleep. He was all tuckered out. It cracked me up that he got so scared of those two guys because he normally runs to greet people when they come over.
