The assignment was to write a story that was exactly 300 words long and edit it to a story that was exactly 200 words long. We were given 20 minutes. I could have edited it any way I wanted, so long as it was 200 words exactly. I think the second version lacks emotional impact as well.
The fish kite story is a true one, by the way. hahaha! It was the only time I ever tried to fly a kite.
