I met with our AFLAC representative today to cancel my supplementary insurance. My company recently added higher yield life insurance policies and short-term disability options, so I no longer needed AFLAC. I felt bad cancelling it because having it brought me peace of mind while I had it. So as she was filling out the cancellation paperwork I mentioned how well I liked it. She asked if I had filed any claims and I mentioned that I had used my Wellness benefit several times (they send me a $65 check if I provide proof that I had a Wellness exam such as a pap). She said I could expect another one of those and I said, "Great! I just had a baby and I think the Wellness benefit covers that). She said, "Wait... you didn't file a claim for short-term disability?" I didn't know maternity leave was considered a disability. Turns out they owe me over $1,000! Awesome. I sometimes wonder if my 20-year-old self was smarter than my 27-year-old self. I'm now reaping the benefits of good decisions I made when I was younger.

A tax deduction and a $1000 insurance payout? Score! Although it does seem weird that they would pay you for short-term disability.
