I was lucky to see The Matrix the first weekend when it was released. Hard to believe now, but it was not hyped much when it first hit theaters, and it was something of a sleeper. No hysteria around it. I liked it then, but the subsequent hype and the crappy first sequel dampened my enthusiasm (I didn't even bother to see the third film). I think Existenz is a better "virtual reality" movie, though.
